Hera Coffee Table by Allegra Hicks

Stories Editor's Pick Hera Coffee Table by Allegra Hicks

The Italian-British designer explores the harmonious relationship between art & design.

The conversation of opposites is what truly draws Allegra Hicks to interior architecture and design. Her recent metal work, specifically the Hera Coffee Table, is arguably the most accomplished example of this approach; the soft crocheted textures in rigid bronze are borne three-dimensionally out of this visual exchange.

Never intimidated by structural limitations, Allegra loves to design tables: “I feel that tables bring another dimension to design thanks to their very function. One can paint on a tabletop as if it were a canvas, and yet design its base as if it were a sculpture. This flexibility appeals to me as an artist and designer, as I can simultaneously express myself in more than one medium, exploring how two- and three-dimensional design find balance together.”

Hera Coffee Table – available in two iterations, either square or rectangular top – is crafted with extraordinary skill by specialist makers, using cast bronze and brass. The piece has an alchemic, almost magical quality to it, with soft crochet knits transformed into hard sculptures. Despite the rough, hardened finish of the cast bronze, the table’s crocheted structure retains an ethereal fluidity.

To celebrate Allegra Hicks’ gorgeous designs for The Invisible Collection, we hosted a private dinner at the Mews, our new headquarters, where a selection of her stunning pieces are now on view: contact us to book an appointment.

Allegra Hicks

Allegra Hicks is an artist and designer who lives and works between London and Naples. Known for her eye for patterns, Allegra attributes her inspiration to the world around her, building from the colours and forms found in nature. Beginning her career in fresco painting, today Allegra continues to respect the fluidity of watercolour across a wide range of media, from tapestries to rugs to cast bronze and metal work. Over the past decades, Allegra’s work has flourished into one of design pieces which investigate the diaphanous bridge between art and design.
