Since the end of the 1950’s the House of Goossens has been extending its savoir-faire as a costume jewellery and accessory maker into the world of “jewels for spaces”: chandeliers, mirrors, lamps and other decorative objects. It was Gabrielle Chanel who suggested that Robert Goossens enlarge his field of expression. During a discussion in her famous apartment located on the rue Cambon, she asked him to think of an object that could be added to a rock crystal globe originating from a chandelier. The goldsmith made her a pedestal to support the stone: a trio of golden lions, representing the designer’s zodiac sign and a powerful symbol at the House of CHANEL. He went on to create other elements for her such as the waterlily pedestal table and the table with a wheat sheaf base, both of which are still present in the apartment.
