This rug was created for an exhibition themed on the concept of metamorphosis, showcasing several interior designers and decorators, including Maarten Baas – already well known for his famous series of burnt objects. Baas was going to exhibit a burnt Pleyel piano, and Pierre Yovanovitch wanted to design a rug that would conjure that precise moment right after the fire, when everything is not yet completely charred and there still remain traces of fire… It must be said that, for his rugs, Yovanovitch prefers abstract compositions rather than figurative ones. However, even when using an abstract language, a rug must tell a story: on this rug, Pierre Yovanovitch drew the movement of smoke, its volutes swirling around, and its fumes stagnating in the air… He imagined that the fire had started on a raw wooden floor and on some stones, hence the choice of colors. The hand-woven rug was manufactured in Aubusson. The wool and jute threads give it a rougher structure, whilst the mohair threads add a more comfortable feel, making it softer and cushier… Everything is in these contrasts, the opposition of materials and storytelling: the metaphor of metamorphosis.
