This coupe, dated around 1950, is the work of André Thuret, a trained scientist who turned to glassmaking as a lifelong passion and is now offered through Crosta Smith Gallery, the St John’s Wood, London house founded by Marine Edith Crosta and Daniel Smith and dedicated to French Art Deco and Modernist design of the 1920s-1940s. Thuret experimented obsessively with the forms and colors that molten glass could hold, and because every dish was blown entirely by hand, no two of his creations share the same silhouette, making this piece a genuine, one-of-a-kind fragment of France’s mid-century glassmaking history.
