EDITOR’S NOTE

Named for the Pink City itself, the “Jaipur” domino paper conjures the opulence of an ancient Indian palace through a profusion of seductive floral motifs, its layered blooms rendered in a palette as rich and warm as a Rajasthani courtyard. The pattern belongs to the centuries-old French tradition of domino papers, once used to line the interiors of boxes, screens and cabinets.

Entirely handmade using traditional woodblock printing, each sheet carries tiny irregularities in line and colour that are the very proof of its authenticity, no two impressions ever perfectly alike. Framed, wrapped around a lampshade or applied to a small wall, it brings a jewel-toned echo of Jaipur into a Western interior.

The Designer

Antoinette Poisson

A Paris chez Antoinette Poisson, is the brainchild of Vincent Farelly and Jean-Baptiste Martin, two heritage restorers specializing in wallpaper, who are reviving the 18th century savoir-faire of domino paper. They first discovered fragments of domino paper by accident in an ancient, dilapidated house and tried to reconstitute it. Learning about the history of “dominoterie” and its fine technique, they brought it back to life in a contemporary setting. The paper is printed and painted by hand in the duo’s Parisian atelier. The brand’s name is a homage to the Marquise de Pompadour, born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, a lover of art and wallpaper, who lived when the domino styles flourished.
