      EDITOR’S NOTE

The Utö chairs from Axel Hjorth Sportstugemöble line of modernist cabin furniture from the 1930’s epitomize the designer’s talent to mix the aesthetics of rural handcraft with international modernism.

      ABOUT THE DESIGNER
      The Designer

Form, function and elegance: the designs by Axel Einar Hjorth have been influencing Swedish aesthetic since the early 1920s. After studying architecture and design at the Högre Konstindustriella Skolan -the renowned University of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm-, Hjorth caught everybody’s attention during the 1923 Gothenburg Exhibition world’s fair where he showed his first furniture pieces. His unmistakable signature style balanced wonderfully the traditional, rather rustic lines of everyday furniture with the bold accents of modern design. Inspired by contrasting influences, including Art Deco and Rationalism, he always stayed true to his passion for simple, functional shapes.
