EDITOR’S NOTE

The Set of 6 Tumblers Oriental Flowers Persian was designed by Gustav Schmoranz for Lobmeyr in 1898, its colourful flower ornaments drawing directly from the oriental aesthetic that swept European decorative arts following the opening of the Suez Canal. Each tumbler is a small window onto that fascination with the East.

The hand-applied floral enamels sit against clear crystal, dense with pattern yet perfectly legible, a hallmark of Lobmeyr’s Vienna workshop at the turn of the century. More than a century later, the design remains a striking example of how trade routes and travel could reshape the language of European glassmaking.

Now in its sixth generation as a family business, the fine Austrian glassware maker J. & L. Lobmeyr was founded in 1823 by Joseph Lobmeyr, who, from his little shop in the heart of Vienna, became Purveyor to the Imperial Court. The glasses are still mouth-blown, cut, engraved and polished by hand. As the company focuses on the contemporary interpretation of glass, it never stops cultivating its heritage, marked by the ground-breaking collaborations with legendary designers in the likes of Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Ted Muehling and Michael Anastassiades. Lobmeyr crystal can be found in museums' collections including the MoMA New York, V&A London and the MAK in Vienna."
