EDITOR’S NOTE

The White Porcelain Jug belongs to the Écailles de Couleuvre series, its name borrowed from the scaled pattern of a grass snake and reimagined as an invitation to quiet contemplation. Cast in white kaolin biscuit, the jug has a matte, almost chalky surface that contrasts with the smooth enamel lining its interior.

The finish is deliberately restrained, letting the material itself, one of the purest forms of porcelain, do the work of impressing rather than any applied decoration. It is a luxury item conceived for everyday use, proof that the finest craftsmanship need not shout to be noticed.

As the heir to the best French taste (le Grand Goût) since 1789, Manufacture de Couleuvre carries on the tradition of the decorative arts. Symbolizing the art of living, the factory reissues iconic household designs, and offers creations and collaborations with contemporary artists. After 15 years working in the art and culture sector, Sophie Salager bought the Couleuvre factory with the ambition of flying the flag for French know-how. As an entrepreneur on a constant quest for beauty in ideas and objects since 2011, she now brilliantly orchestrates the production of the exceptional china that this unique factory has been making since 1789.
