EDITOR’S NOTE

Profile By is the olfactory art project by Diane Thalheimer, pairing six contemporary artists with six perfumers from IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) to create original sculptures that diffuse bespoke fragrances, each duo matched through in-depth interviews about memory, personality and scent.

Saisir L’impossible by Profile By is not just an object to display. It captures artist Daniel Firman’s right hand holding… his own right hand, an olfactive sculpture born from the artist’s earlier fascination with casting his own gestures in bronze, here extended into a poetic embrace of a scented ceramic sphere.

Cast entirely in bronze, the two clasped hands hold a ceramic sphere infused with an original fragrance by perfumer Nicolas Beaulieu, its warm, resinous accord recalling the scent of oak barrels. As with every Profile By piece, the sculpture is produced as a strictly limited, signed and numbered edition.

The Designer

Profile By

Diane Thalheimer, a well-known perfumer, set herself apart in the early 2000s by inventing her new profession: Olfactive Profiler. Looking for something that made sense, she started to work on understanding and decoding the vision of a brand or of a personality and translating those traits into original scents. Whilst collaborating with many leading companies, in 2021, Diane launched Profile By, a personal project bringing together artists and perfumers on a special collaboration about olfactive sculptures. The first collection comprises a series of limited-edition pieces: perfume becomes the extension of an artwork. Or is it the artwork that becomes a visual and olfactory experience?
