Stories News Pendhapa

The up-and-coming Eurasian design studio joins The Invisible Collection. When form, function and ethos align…

We are delighted to introduce Atelier Pendhapa, the celebrated architecture and design studio founded by two creative and energetic minds. Antonin Hautefort and Ignatio Tenggara met at the Architectural Association in London while completing their master of Architecture. Their careers started on different paths: Antonin joined Heatherwick Studio in London- working on architectural and nautical design projects in New York, Cape Town and Singapore, whilst Ignatio took a position in AL_A in London, working on projects in Australia, Hong Kong, the UK and Paris. What brought them back together again were their fascination for local craftsmanship and a shared passion for innovative design processes.

Antonin grew up in France whereas Ignatio comes from Indonesia:  their radically different cultural background was an additional motivation when they decided to found their design studio in 2019. Pendhapa Atelier is where they merged their cultural and visual DNA, whilst ambitioning to dissolve the boundaries between furniture and architecture. Since its inception, the studio has been developing projects of various scales encompassing bespoke furnishings, interior design and holistic architectural projects all around the world.

Pendhapa is the old Javanese word for the iconic vernacular structures built all across Indonesia that represents the essence of the atelier: a traditional construction that is different every time as it adapts to its context, where materials redefine form as continually as the landscape changes. As all contexts are special, Atelier Pendhapa investigates their unique characteristics, in order to unfold a design that exposes its potential. Fusing together contemporary culture with traditional techniques and materials, the studio generates innovative forms and pushes the boundaries of what can be handmade today.

Wood is the material of choice for most collections, as hand-carved solid wood lends the furnishings a weighty, significant quality both in their aesthetic and long lifespan. Each piece aims at finding the good balance between elegant, generous curves in tension with straight edges. For each architectural project the studio creates a new collection of furnishings conveying confident visual lightness through monolithic – sometime enigmatic – forms and materials.

We handpicked some one-of-a-kind designs that best express the studio’s ethos, including an array of sculptural armchairs and side tables. Discover now Atelier Pendhapa’s collection available through us.
