Tables

Table-designing can be challenging: this piece of furnishing has to meet many requirements in addition to form and functionality. Some of you might recall the anecdote about the painstaking back-and-forth that took place between Alvar Aalto and one of his clients who had in mind a very specific dinner table. He wrote to Aalto that the furnishing was to “have a certain height to fit the very long legs of the French President Charles De Gaulle”. Fast forward to the twenty-first century and yet the same old issues: step inside any celebrity’s home and you’ll see beautiful custom made tables in almost every room.

However, with the challenge comes the reward, as designers love to create original designs playing with shapes and textures. The Invisible Collection sells a wide variety of iconic tables that are instant classics. Designed by today’s star designers, including AD 100 listers, these covetable tables are handmade by the best craftsmen in Europe. Given the variety and versatility of materials, our top designers create bespoke tables with added visual texture: the allure of lacquer, the elegance of plaster, the boldness of brass, the timelessness of wood… The latter has become the signature material of Louise Liljencrantz who creates stunning coffee-tables and dining-tables in solid wood that feature a special patina made with linen seed oil. Other designers enjoy playing with contrasting materials, pairing steel with marble, or onyx with glass.

When it comes to tables, most designers love to break the rules and deliver free-spirited interpretations of the familiar geometric shapes – circle, square and rectangle. Original, irregular lines lend the tables a cutting-edge quality highly appreciated by collectors and design connoisseurs. In fact, both Phillips and Sotheby’s regularly auction contemporary collectible tables that fetch stellar prices. Among the wide range of tables available on The Invisible Collection we feature some darling side-tables – sold exclusively through us – including the “Star and Moon” and the “Two-Toned Lacquered Sofa-Table” designed by the award-winning design studio Campbell-Rey. In addition to contemporary designs, The Invisible Collection sells re-issues by the great names of the Art Deco movement – Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray and Jean-Michel Frank, to name but a few – and by the masters of Brazilian midcentury modern. These re-issues are in certified wood, as we value eco-friendly practices and sustainability. Browse through our collection of covetable tables available on The Invisible Collection.
