Barrie + Sofia Coppola

Stories Showrooms Barrie + Sofia Coppola

The talented filmmaker was at Invisible Collection New York to present a clothing line of ultra-sophisticated cashmeres, created in collaboration with Barrie.

Since her unforgettable debut movie “The Virgin Suicides,” Sofia Coppola has been making waves in indie filmmaking and beyond. With her distinct cinematic style of evocative storytelling and visual elegance she captures the audience, depicting intimacy and vulnerability like no otherHer films are always variations on the same themes of frailty, emotions and human connections, of identity and alienation, showcased in the ultra-sophisticated atmospheres that have become her signature style. Her latest movie “Priscilla”- based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir- is yet again an exploration of the sheer solitude of a very young woman trapped in a lonely marriage with Elvis, the King ruling over Graceland (some might see a striking parallel with her previous movie Marie Antoinette…). Priscilla was praised by the critics, who saw it at the Venice Film Festival last September and is now being released worldwide.

Fans of Sofia Coppola will be pleased to know that the Italian American filmmaker has also authored a fascinating book – “Archive” published by Mack – that covers the entirety of her singular and influential career in film. Constructed from Coppola’s personal collection of photographs and ephemera, including early development work, reference collages, influences, annotated scripts, and unseen behind-the-scenes documentation, it offers a detailed account of all of her eight films to date, including “Priscilla”.In addition to her filmmaking career, Sofia Coppola has had a significant presence and influence in the world of fashion. Her keen eye for aesthetics and storytelling has led her to collaborate with brands and designers, working on various fashion projects, directing commercials and short films for the likes of Chanel and Dior, and doing the occasional fashion design herself, creating capsule collections for fashion houses.

Her latest stint in the fashion industry is with Barrie, the beloved cashmere knitting manufacturer that is part of Chanel’s Métiers d’Art, and available on Invisible Collection through its home line of cushions. The Barrie + Sofia Coppola limited edition collaboration brings together the filmmaker’s own sense of style and the French brand savoir faire, highlighting the ideal wardrobe for a busy creative lifestyle, with timeless pieces to create a sense of comfort, ease, and elegance. The collection reflects a simple sophistication, offering versatile garments that cover all bases – at home, traveling or entertaining. A self-confessed Barrie fan, Sofia Coppola appreciates the house’s focus on quality and the truly long-lasting potential of each piece, both through craftmanship and style.

This collaboration was a chance for her to imagine, along with Augustin Dol-Maillot, Barrie’s artistic director, a dream wardrobe, perfectly suited to travel, work and leisure. “I’m a big fan of Barrie, it was so fun to work with the Barrie team on my dream pieces: for a travel wardrobe that’s cozy and chic,” says Sofia. “I will be living in them this winter!”

The Barrie + Sofia Coppola collection was unveiled at Invisible Collection New York, attracting a fashionable crowd of aesthetes and tastemakers, including Anna Sui, Carole Bouquet, Gucci Westman, Derek Blasberg, Vanessa Traina, Lynn Yaeger, Ivy Getty, Elie Top and Margaret Qualley. It was thrilling to welcome such talented filmmaker and Barrie’s guests in our home.

Barrie

Founded in 1903, Barrie is one of Scotland’s oldest cashmere manufacturers. The mill in Hawick, a small town on the Scottish border, started by producing socks and stockings, and then, by the 1920s, extended its savoir-faire to clothing, specifically sweaters and knitwear. The House’s tradition and technique are paired with a strong taste for innovation and boldness. This is why, as well as supplying the biggest names in fashion including Chanel, Barrie launched its own brand in 2014. A graduate of LISAA, School of Art and Design, he then joined the CHANEL studio, working alongside Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard, focusing on sportswear.
