Design Miami/ 2023

Stories Destinations Design Miami/ 2023

Design enthusiasts gather at Design Miami/ and Art Basel Miami for a celebration of contemporary design and art on sunny Miami Beach.

The nineteenth edition of Design Miami/ will welcome design aficionados from all over the world with yet another fantastic program of exhibitions, special projects, collaborations and thought-provoking themes. This year’s curatorial theme is Where We Stand, a reflection on place and purpose and a celebration of design, heritage, and community. Anna Carnick, Curatorial Director of Curio, says, “I am honored to serve as Curatorial Director for this year’s Design Miami/. The fair has always been a platform for inspiring, creative exchange, and this year’s edition continues that beautiful legacy. I chose the theme, Where We Stand, not only to spotlight the role design plays in reflecting and responding to the world around us, but also as an invitation to consider how it might help us navigate this complex, far too often divided moment. Design can be a powerful tool for storytelling—and stories allow us to access one another’s humanity. In celebrating objects from around the globe inspired by narratives of place, community, and heritage— sources we all refer to for strength, clarity and purpose—I hope this year’s Design Miami/ will spark thoughtful conversations about the ties that bind us and how they might inform our paths forward.

Through an array of exceptional designs – both historic and contemporary – and thought-provoking exhibition concepts, Design Miami/ 2023 will once again reconvene as the global forum for design.” Within the Curio program, Ukrainian artist and designer Victoria Yakusha presents The Land of Light. Victoria, whose collection Faina is available exclusively through us, turned to the ancient Ukrainian craft, yalkuvannya, a technique typically used for wall finishing for the works on show at Design Miami/. Each piece was made from the live material, ZTISTA – a sustainable blend of clay, hay, and recycled materials. Applied in more than five layers to a wooden structure, ZTISTA creates a textured, vibrant surface. The act of applying this sustainable material, allows for the creation of an object that absorbs and transmits a living energy. The result is a series of objects beyond functionality, designs that reflect the spirit and wisdom of the land where they come from. Design Miami/ connects the world through extraordinary collectible design bringing together galleries, designers’ studios, brands, experts, collectors, and enthusiasts.

Amid the many highlights, our partners Le Mobilier national will present a selection of new works from five rising stars on the French design scene in collaboration with Villa Albertine. Straddling the line between tradition and the avant-garde, each piece is rooted in a reimagined traditional artisanal technique and embraces forms that are at once organic and futuristic. The works from the five up-and-coming talents are part of the 2022 acquisition campaign of le Mobilier national, a collection which will be showcased by Invisible Collection in Paris during the January edition of Maison & Objet. Highlights for the Design Talks Program include “Perfectly in Sync: Paula Wallace in Conversation with Kelly Wearstler” presented by SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design. We can’t wait to hear from the ultra-talented Wearstler who is joining Invisible Collection this coming January with a selection of her most sought-after pieces.
