Background
Before founding Kaia in 2013, Manuela Szewald worked as a tax lawyer for a financial institution in Frankfurt and London. It’s in 2010, whilst refurbishing her family’s holiday home – a hamlet of 300-year-old farmhouses- that she rediscovered her deep passion for interior design and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship. Realizing that her true call was not in tax law, she took a new direction and launched Kaia, a lighting manufacturer working with exceptional artisans and designers.

Viewing the design process as a continuous, unending journey, where the object’s aesthetic appeal is appreciated when the lights are off, and its function valued when they’re on, Kaia deeply respect the construction and craftsmanship of the products, nurtured through close collaborations with European artisans. The design takes into account the essence of each element – resulting in harmonious objects born out of function and honesty.
