L’Esprit Français: New Designs on Show in New York

Stories Showrooms L’Esprit Français: New Designs on Show in New York

New designs by Maylis et Charles Tassin, a selection of pieces from le Mobilier national and a special collaboration with four Maisons d’Art: Invisible Collection celebrates French aesthetic and savoir-faire with a new exhibition in New York.

The Big Apple is buzzing with a rich calendar of events marking New York Design Week and French Design Days, and The Townhouse, our home in New York, is the perfect venue to showcase a curated selection of designs that epitomize contemporary French aesthetic.

We invited renowned design duo Maylis et Charles Tassin to create a sophisticated setting with some of their unmistakable furniture pieces and lighting fixtures, specially commissioned for the event. More than an exhibition, “L’Esprit Français” is an experiential mise-en-scene that conjures our idea of le goût français, French taste, which draws from the great tradition of Arts Décoratifs. It’s all about harmonious shapes, sophisticated materials, and exceptional detailing that softly murmur understated luxe.

In a class of their own, Maylis et Charles Tassin have created an array of designs that epitomize the couple’s Frenchness and ingenious take on twentieth century design. Mixing a variety of inspirations, they play with cultural tropes, drawing as easily from sci-fi B movies as from the enduring legacy of Bauhaus aesthetic, or Jean Arp’s dada sculptures. “L’Esprit Français” is yet another example of their signature style: a classically contemporary mix that captures many eras and moods seamlessly coming together in a serene flow.

After the successful launch in Paris of our special collaboration with le Mobilier national – a heritage institution that has preserved and promoted French aesthetics and superior craftsmanship for centuries – we brought a few selected pieces from their permanent collection to the Big Apple.

These one-of-a-kind contemporary designs, available exclusively through us, exemplify the vivacious French design scene of up-and-coming creatives. Highlights from the show include the Torsion 2021 Lamp by Hervé Wahlen and the Mava Armchair by Maison Leleu.

Seamlessly incorporated in the elegant décor, is an array of objects and special creations from Goossens, Lemarié, Lesage Intérieurs and Studio MTX, four exceptional Maisons d’Art from le 19M, the venue created on the initiative of Chanel. Their legendary savoir-faire now focuses on custom interior design projects, which can be discovered at The Townhouse. Each of these heritage brands has a distinct specialty and identity, ranging from goldsmithing and feather work to pleating, furniture embroidery, and architectural embroidery, bringing unparalleled expertise and cutting-edge innovation to interior design. Do visit us in New York to discover L’Esprit Français!
