Stories Editor's Pick New In: Vandra Rugs

Scandinavian aesthetic meets contemporary design: discover the enticing hand-woven rugs created by Vandra Rugs.

We are delighted to introduce Vandra Rugs, a company we love for their creativity, and admire for their commitment to people and the planet. Founded in 2005 by Cia Attling and Marie Wallenberg Olsson, the Swedish heritage brand revisits traditional weaving techniques creating custom rugs that are woven by hand either with a rag-rug technique or from yarn using the highest quality natural materials.

Since its inception, Vandra Rugs has committed to non-impactful production, working on made to order only and using natural, responsibly sourced materials. Moreover, the founders have been championing women empowerment, training, and employing female weavers and helping them grow into managerial positions.

The brand collaborates with a weaving atelier in southern Ukraine, where skilful artisans keep alive ancient weaving techniques whilst working closely with their Swedish counterparts. Under the present, dramatic circumstances, the Ukrainian atelier has been relocated to a safer area in the small historic town of Kosiv, close to the border of Romania, and known for its artistic handicrafts and kilims. Most weavers and their families were safely relocated to this new atelier.

The four-piece offering we present epitomizes the brand’s signature style, defined by gorgeous textures and uncommon patterns. Highlights include the subtly nuanced Clay & Grass rug – inspired by Lars Nilsson’s work with ceramics and past influences from the fashion world- and the Giotto Rug, defined a striking color palette and bold proportions.

Hand-made by skilled artisans, these gorgeous rugs often combine both tufting and weaving, making use of and mixing different materials such as wool felt and wool yarn, lurex or sheep fur to cleverly create contrast and texture as well as visual effect.

Vandra Rugs

Vandra Rugs was founded in 2005 by Cia Attling, Larissa Bodén and Marie Wallenberg Olsson. With a background in marketing and finance, and an interest in art and architecture by heritage, the three women share a passion for craftsmanship and contemporary design. Tapping into traditional Swedish weaving techniques, Vandra Rugs creates a variety of styles that combine design and handicraft knowledge. All rugs are woven by hand either with a rag-rug technique or from yarn exclusively using the highest quality natural materials including cotton, wool-felt, wool-yarn and linen. Since 2007, the brand collaborates with a weaving atelier in southern Ukraine. The Ukrainian weavers have long experience in local weaving traditions and have received on-site training from Swedish weavers in order to acquire in-depth knowledge of Swedish weaving. Given the dramatic circumstances, the Ukrainian atelier has been relocated to a safer area in the small historic town of Kosiv, close to the border of Romania, and known for its artistic handicrafts and kilims. Most weavers and their families were safely relocated to this new atelier.
