The Gouffre Console is the work of Franck Genser, the Paris-based designer whose body of work is devoted almost entirely to plaster, treated less as a construction medium than as a sculptural skin capable of extraordinary depth and texture.
True to its name, meaning “chasm” or “abyss” in French, the console is carved and varnished to evoke a hollow, cavernous form reminiscent of a fireplace surround, designed to command attention in an entrance or reception room. Handmade entirely in France, it embodies Genser’s belief that furniture should carry an emotional charge, transforming plaster’s humble reputation into something monumental and quietly theatrical.
Franck Genser began attending auction houses in Nancy at the age of six or seven, in a city rich with decorative arts. Immersed in this environment from a young age, he developed a deep interest in Decorative Arts, particularly Art Nouveau. Franck Genser delivers high-end furniture and lighting fixtures with striking shapes that capture the imagination.
