The Tufo piece by Hors-Studio is a sculptural coffee table made from Leatherstone©, a material made from leather scraps. In France, 15,000 tonnes of leather waste are generated, and recycling it is a complex issue. We therefore took this waste and came up with creative solutions to add value to the sector. We developed Leatherstone©, a very energy-efficient material that dries in the open air without baking. It takes on the appearance of stone and has thermal properties. Tufo is the very first piece of furniture made with our material. Leatherstone©, with its faux stone effect, guided us towards an approach that pays homage to Tuffeau stone and tells the story of a region. This light-coloured stone, extracted from quarries, has dominated the architecture of the Loire Valley region where we operate. Tufo questions the exploitation of natural resources and proposes using waste to sculpt and redesign while decarbonising. The table is as if carved from a single block, frozen in time. It evokes the imprint of the quarryman’s work and invites us to reflect on the precariousness of our resources.
