Jean-Michel Frank
Ecart International, founded by Andree Putman, faithfully re-edits Frank’s 1930s designs alongside those of Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray, keeping his rigorous, quietly luxurious vision alive for contemporary interiors.
The X Round Stool 1934, designed by Jean-Michel Frank and re-edited by Ecart, once stood in the window of the decorator’s own boutique at 140, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore, where its crossed X-form base was originally paired with a leather seat embroidered with a motif by the artist Christian Berard, a collaboration that placed Frank’s furniture in direct dialogue with the Parisian art world of the 1930s.
Today the stool is pictured in varnished solid oak upholstered in foal, and is also available in fabric, leather or shearling, with bespoke woods offered upon request. The crossed legs, at once structural and sculptural, remain the piece’s defining gesture, a compact study in balance that needs no further decoration.

“You can furnish a room very luxuriously by unfurnishing it” is probably one of Frank’s most famous quotes, highlighting his taste for minimalism: some of his most iconic interiors are indeed marked by sparingly arranged furniture and creamy whites all around. This hallmark of non-colours was most emphasised by the iconic salon that Frank decorated for Marie-Laure and Charles de Noailles’s hôtel particulier in Paris. Panels of parchment on the walls, compact white armchairs, straw-marquetry side tables, lamps made of quartz, and stunning bronze doors: the room immortalised by Man Ray’s black-and-white photographs has become the paradigm of sophistication.
