The Peneloppa Chandelier carries the name of Maison Leleu, the French Art Deco house Jules Leleu founded in 1910 and that once dressed the ocean liner Normandie, the Elysee Palace and the United Nations lounge in Geneva. Revived today by great-granddaughter Alexia Leleu, the maison works from its own archive, translating drawings by Jules, Jean and Paule Leleu into pieces for contemporary interiors.
Built from three concentric bronze rings finished in gunmetal and gilded bronze, each carrying fifteen lights on an adjustable stem, the Peneloppa chandelier diffuses its glow through polycarbonate and white paper rather than glass. The pairing of robust cast metal with fragile, translucent paper, drawn from an Art Deco sideboard in the Leleu archives, gives the fixture a lightness that belies its considerable scale.
Founded in 1910 by Jules Leleu, Maison Leleu has been the reference point for French interior decoration throughout the twentieth century. One of the most sought after ensembliers of his time, Jules Leleu seamlessly merged new styles and materials fully embracing Art Deco’s innovations. The designer and furniture maker created an array of collections encompassing all furnishings, including rugs and lights, beautifully executed by highly skilled craftsmen. With the help of his sons, Jules successfully incorporated the 40s modernism into his design process without ever sacrificing the superior quality of his work. Jules passed away in 1961, leaving his company in the capable hands of his progeny. The brand is now run by the fourth generation of Leleus, with great-granddaughter Alexia unearthing some emblematic pieces from the company’s archives and reviving them with a contemporary touch.
