Introducing Atelier Tortil’s “The Minimalist Wave,” a new collection of rugs designed by Alain Bourdon, which are inspired by the mighty ocean. Here is how the artist embraces nature’s essence through design.

The captivating world of Alain Bourdon draws from the ocean’s sensations, the symbiosis with natural elements, and the profound emotions evoked by waves. In his inaugural line of rugs, aptly named “The Minimalist Wave“, Bourdon intricately weaves his vision into the fabric, creating a synergy between art and nature. This remarkable collection marks the second chapter of the coveted “Cahier d’artistes” series produced and crafted by Atelier Tortil.
Alain Bourdon recounts the genesis of this collaborative endeavour, which started with a telephone conversation with Jean-Pierre Tortil, an admirer of his work. Inspired by the graceful form of surfed waves—an enduring passion in his life—Bourdon conceived the concept of “The Minimalist Wave.” It symbolises his quest for freedom and communion with nature, delivering a profound sense of calm and grandeur. Jean-Pierre Tortil, deeply moved by Bourdon’s artistic universe, embraced the idea of translating his drawings into textile creations.

The challenge lay in preserving the bold lines while projecting them into a three-dimensional realm enriched with images and sensations—foam, sand, and the mesmerising movement of swells. Hand-tufting, a meticulous craft, was chosen as the ideal method to breathe life into Bourdon’s designs and bring forth their intricate patterns. The primary material used was wool, complemented by other fibers such as Tencel, Gleam (a nylon fiber), and even a touch of lurex in select pieces. The two designs, Reef and Swell, embody distinct approaches: the former highlights the strength of the graphic style, evoking movement and a vibrant palette, while the latter embraces a more textured aesthetic to depict the natural elements that define this unique artistic universe.

For Alain Bourdon, looking at these rugs is akin to experiencing the exhilaration of surfing. It captures the enchanting moment of witnessing a wave pass beneath your board and surrendering to the elemental forces—an encounter that ultimately offers serenity. The Minimalist Wave extends an invitation to embark on a sensory road trip, evoking the spirit of tranquillity, suspended time, and serenity through breathtaking images of expansive Australian landscapes, picturesque Californian coastlines, and mid-century architectural marvels… Prepare to be immersed in a world that echoes the captivating feeling of watching waves roll in.
