Stéphanie Amÿot moves fluidly between interior architecture and one-off furniture pieces for her Paris studio. The Wilson Wood Stool is one such object — a Wilson stool whose rounded, hand-finished form reads as sculpture as much as seating.
Hand-carved from a solid ash tree trunk and finished in matte varnish, this stool keeps the memory of the tree in its grain and slightly irregular silhouette. Where the ceramic Wilson stools are cast and glazed, this version is carved by hand from a single mass of timber, a slower, more physical process that Amÿot favours for the warmth and organic weight it lends a room.
After graduating at Ecole Supérieur des Arts in Tournai, Belgium, Stéphanie Amÿot honed her skills in interior design with Richard Martinet, the principal of Affine Design. In 2014, she launched her namesake studio focusing on private and hospitality projects, including hotels and restaurants. Alongside her regular collaborations with famed Parisian architects and interior designers in the likes of Thierry Lemaire, Michel Amar, and Jean-Philippe Nuel, Stéphanie Amÿot creates site-specific furniture pieces and lighting fixtures.
