Ecart
Founded in Paris in 1978 by Andrée Putman, Ecart set out to give a second life to the great names of French Modernism, reissuing the furniture and lighting of Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray and Robert Mallet-Stevens with the same rigor and restraint that first defined the movement in the 1920s and 1930s.
The Kraft Floor Lamp turns an everyday material into something precious, wrapping its light in a shade of kraft paper — the humble brown paper of parcels and workshops — a choice that channels Ecart’s founding spirit of ‘luxe pauvre,’ the belief instilled by Andrée Putman that true elegance lies in honest materials rather than ostentation.
Standing on a base of lacquered steel with patinated brass details, the lamp casts a soft, warm glow filtered through the kraft paper shade, which diffuses light with an almost lantern-like tenderness. The interplay of industrial metal and humble paper gives the piece a paradoxical richness, refined precisely because it refuses to look expensive.

Founded in the late seventies, Ecart is the brainchild of the ineffable Andrée Putman, the brilliant aesthete who singlehandedly revived the neglected work of some great designers from the 1930s, including René Herbst, Jean-Michel Frank, Pierre Chareau and Eileen Gray. Following her instinct informed by her unique taste, Putman made the rather counterintuitive choice of re-editing some iconic designs from the past, despite the fact that, at the time, the business of furniture was all about newness.
