Francesco Balzano designs the way an architect thinks: in volumes, thresholds and light. Named among AD France’s 100 Best Designers and winner of the Villa Medici Prize from the French Academy in Rome, the Paris-based designer draws on a childhood spent between Venice, Rome and Florence to give his furniture, produced through SATTIO Studio, the weight and calm of monuments rather than mere objects.

The Cesar side table sets a smoked high-gloss eucalyptus body against an inset of Lens stone, reversing the material hierarchy of the dining table to let the wood’s dark sheen carry the piece and the stone punctuate it. It carries the same reference to Villa Necchi’s interiors and Italian piazzas at a scale suited to a sofa’s edge.
