Burnt Wood Sideboard

Since the seventeenth century, the Mobilier National has served as the guardian of France’s decorative arts heritage, commissioning and preserving furniture for the French Republic’s most prestigious residences and embassies. In recent years the institution has opened its collections to a new generation of makers, selecting only a handful of contemporary designers each year whose work is judged worthy of entering the nation’s permanent patrimony, alongside centuries of royal and republican craftsmanship.

For the Burnt Wood Sideboard, Materra-Matang, the Paris studio of architects Ophélie Dozat and Lucien Dumas whose work entered the Mobilier National’s collections in 2025, applies the Japanese-inspired technique of charring cedar to seal and darken its grain before wrapping the cabinet in a hand-tied Danish paper cord dyed with turmeric. Limited to eight signed pieces, the result sets a deep, blackened wood against a warm golden-yellow braid, a study in controlled fire and dye applied to a single, humble material.
