Profile By is the olfactory art project by Diane Thalheimer, pairing six contemporary artists with six perfumers from IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) to create original sculptures that diffuse bespoke fragrances, each duo matched through in-depth interviews about memory, personality and scent.
Saisir l’Impossible by Profile By is not just a bronze sculpture. It fulfils artist Daniel Firman’s lifelong desire to hold the impossible, both of his hands cast in bronze and clasped around a white ceramic sphere, taking his earlier work of one hand grasping its own cast even further into pure poetry.
Limited to 30 signed and numbered copies, the sculpture pairs bronze and perfumed ceramic with an original fragrance by Nicolas Beaulieu, described as ‘mineral wood’ and recalling the deep, resinous scent of oak barrels, an olfactory echo of the material used to age the world’s finest spirits.
Diane Thalheimer, a well-known perfumer, set herself apart in the early 2000s by inventing her new profession: Olfactive Profiler. Looking for something that made sense, she started to work on understanding and decoding the vision of a brand or of a personality and translating those traits into original scents. Whilst collaborating with many leading companies, in 2021, Diane launched Profile By, a personal project bringing together artists and perfumers on a special collaboration about olfactive sculptures. The first collection comprises 6 pieces: perfume becomes the extension of an artwork. Or is it the artwork that becomes a visual and olfactory experience?
