ZigZag Candlesticks

Stephen Antonson trained as a sculptor and painter before turning to plaster, and that discipline shows in the ZigZag’s angular, faceted profile — a shape that reads as geometric abstraction as much as functional object. Each candlestick is built by hand, layer by layer, plaster brushed onto an armature and then worked back with sanding tools and rasps until the surface finds its faceted, matte finish, closer to carved stone than cast metal. Available in bronze or in cast composite, the two materials shift the object’s character entirely: bronze picks up light along each fold, while the composite keeps the surface quiet and chalky. Grouped in twos or threes at varying heights, they hold their own on a console or dining table without competing with what surrounds them — sculptural enough to stand alone, useful enough to earn their place at the table.
