Background
BOSC was launched in 2014, but its roots go back three generations. The Bastiat family business was founded in 1964 by Marcelle and Joseph Bastiat, then taken over in 2000 by their son Alain and his wife Geneviève. They opened the family workshop to contemporary design, inviting designers to explore new ways of working with its longstanding expertise in chairmaking. Their son Sylvain joined the company in 2022 to lead BOSC’s international growth.
Signature Style
Solid wood lies at the heart of every BOSC collection. Oak from Sologne, beech from the Jura and Canadian walnut are crafted by skilled cabinetmakers, while experienced upholsterers bring each piece to life with equal care. Comfort, function and respect for the materials guide every stage of the process. BOSC works with established designers as well as emerging talent to create furniture with clean, gentle lines and a character of its own. Subtle details and bold, carefully balanced colours are key to the brand’s identity. Traditional craftsmanship is combined with advanced production technology to ensure quality and precision at every scale. Ninety-five per cent of the fabrics used are natural and sourced in Europe.
Showstoppers
Sista is the softer, more playful “sister” of the Notre-Dame chair, designed by Ionna Vautrin for Notre-Dame de Paris and made by BOSC for the cathedral’s new liturgical furnishings. The wider programme received a favourable opinion from France’s National Heritage and Architecture Commission.
Sista retains the understated, dignified character of the original, but its silhouette has been softened with more sensual curves inspired by 1970s design. It has also been adapted for greater comfort over longer periods. The gently curved seat supports the lower back, while the horizontal backrest is formed from two arcs that follow the contours of the body. A discreet handhold makes the chair easy to lift and move.
