Three-Legged Beauties

Stories Editor's Pick Three-Legged Beauties

The first rule of design is that there are no rules… Hence, the stunning, asymmetrical pieces of furniture sporting three legs instead of four. Harmoniously balanced and gorgeously shaped, these pieces add a visually compelling touch to the décor.

The three-leg trend in furniture is nothing new: many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York- have extensive collections of pieces dating back to the 16th century. What’s new is the contemporary, sleek take on three-legged seating and tables by today’s talented designers.

The Tri Chair and the Giraffe Chair by Juliana Lima Vasconcellos, the Arc Small Stool by Louise Liljencrantz, and the Arbor Chair by Pierre Augustin Rose draw from the vast cultural imaginary that fuses African art and European Modernist art. The Sévigné Armchair by Studioparisien and the Baba Stool by Emmanuelle Simon walk the fine line between round and sturdy with just three legs…

The Smooth Wave Console by Damien Langlois-Meurinne, the Ira Console by Studio Akademos, and the Cavalese 02 Console by Martin Massé pull off the hard balancing act of looking sleek with uneven legs. The same applies to some elegant coffee tables defined by alluring, asymmetric shapes.
