Isato Prugger

Stories News Isato Prugger

Japanese roots and Italian know-how: the up-and-coming Isato Prugger joins The Invisible Collection with a series of covetable lamps. Let there be light!

Isato Prugger is not even thirty, however he has already traveled the world learning all about design. After a remarked debut at At Salone del Mobile – Euroluce in 2019, he joined Nèo Design Italiano, a creative group of young professionals operating in the new Italian design landscape.
Combining his industrial training with his sculptural sensibility, Isato conceives limited series of lighting fixtures that explore and push the boundaries of contemporary artisanship in all its potentiality. Always working on finding the perfect balance between innovative technologies and poetic shapes, Isato designs pieces that are true “functional sculptures”.

We handpicked his new series “studio lamp”, one-of-a-kind designs in wood available in limited edition.
On the eve of launching on The Invisible Collection, we asked Isato a few questions:

What drew you to interior architecture and design and what do you like the most about it?
My grandfather was a wood sculptor and I spent many childhood summers in his berstot (workshop). Later on I was trained as an Industrial Designer in Milan, where I studied how to technically make things. I am simply attracted to beautiful shapes and this is what I try to achieve with each design.

Can you describe your work and style in a few words?
Wood is a non-industrial material by definition, since its variable grains and properties make it a challenging material to process in a standardised and repeatable process. Therefore my work has an analog approach, carving new shapes, usually taking months to fine-tune a design, as I try to compromise as little as possible on the first sketch idea, the intuition.

The piece of furniture you most like to design?
I mainly make wood lightings.

The most useful piece of design related advice you’ve received and would like to pass on?
Make only things you would personally own.

What do you like about The Invisible Collection?
I’m amazed by the quality of the designs and artists in The Invisible Collection’s catalogue. I am thrilled to be part of the incredible design selection with my work “Studio Lamp”.

Which piece of furniture (beside your own), available on The Invisible Collection, do you like the most?
I really like the bold shapes of the designs by Pierre Augustin Rose.
