At Atelier Février, every rug begins as a drawing and ends as a hand-knotted object made by more than fifty pairs of hands. Founders Florian Pretet and Lisa Mukhia Pretet insist on wool sourced from the Himalayas and silk from China, on age-old Nepalese knotting techniques, and on leaving room for their clients to shape the final design, because, as they put it, a rug’s beauty lies as much in being unique as in being well made.
The La Ville Rug Black joins Atelier Février’s rug library, presented here in a black colourway. Inspired by Max Ernst’s grattage technique, the dots of La Ville seem to exist below the surface, as though scraped into being; from a distance the piece reads as simple and uniform, but step closer and a shifting field of multicoloured dots slowly reveals itself. Hand-knotted in Nepal from 80% Himalayan wool and 20% silk, at 100 knots per square inch (155,000 knots per square metre), the wool anchoring the pile while the silk catches the light along the pattern’s finer lines. As with every Atelier Février piece, no machines or chemicals ever touch the La Ville Rug Black: colours are approved by sample before weaving begins, and the rug can be scaled, reshaped or recoloured to fit your own room.
