Each design is hand-knotted by artisans in Nepal using traditional Persian, Tibetan and flat-knot techniques that Zelmanovitch has spent more than four decades helping to revive and sustain. Across over thirty collections, Diurne rugs carry the same conviction: that a floor covering can hold as much abstraction, movement and colour vibration as a painting on a wall.
The Noma Rug designed by Diurne strips Marcel Zelmanovitch’s painterly approach down to its most confident gesture, a composition simple enough to read at a glance yet built from the same patient hand-knotting as his most intricate designs. Since founding Galerie Diurne in 1982, Zelmanovitch has treated restraint as its own form of abstraction, no less demanding than complexity.
Hand-knotted in Nepal from 80% wool and 20% pure silk with 200,000 Tibetan knots, the Noma Rug uses the silk content to add a subtle sheen across its surface, so the pattern shifts gently as light moves across the room throughout the day. Bespoke dimensions and colours are available upon request.
After studying art history and visual arts, Marcel Zelmanovitch launched Galerie Diurne in 1982, his studio/exhibition space in the heart of Quartier Latin in Paris. An artist, and accomplished painter, he looks at rugs as though they were blank canvases, on which he can draw his original patterns. Additionally, Marcel wanted to revive Nepal’s artisanal rug-making traditions thanks to his original, one-of-a-kind artworks. Today, Diurne is one of the most sought-after brands for unique rugs, mostly designed by Marcel Zelmanovitch – he has delivered more than 30 collections- alongside special collaborations with contemporary architects and designers.
