Diurne is the rug atelier of the painter and art historian Marcel Zelmanovitch, founded at Galerie Diurne in the heart of Paris’s Quartier Latin. Trained to look at a picture before he ever looked at a loom, he approaches every rug as a blank canvas, translating gesture, colour theory and even the swipe of a finger on an iPad screen into knotted wool and silk.
The Perroquet 13 Rug designed by Diurne descends directly from Les Perroquets, the very first collection Marcel Zelmanovitch created when he opened Galerie Diurne in 1982. Of the parrot-inspired series he once said his idea was ‘to make the wool sing, to find a way to make the fibre vibrate through colour’ — an ambition this rug continues four decades on with its bold, plumage-bright palette.
Hand-knotted in Nepal from 80% wool and 20% pure silk with 200,000 Tibetan knots, the Perroquet 13 Rug relies on that dense knotting to hold saturated colour without it ever looking flat, each knot acting almost like a brushstroke of pigment. Bespoke dimensions and colours are available on request.
After studying art history and visual arts, Marcel Zelmanovitch launched Galerie Diurne in 1982, his studio/exhibition space in the heart of Quartier Latin in Paris. An artist, and accomplished painter, he looks at rugs as though they were blank canvases, on which he can draw his original patterns. Additionally, Marcel wanted to revive Nepal’s artisanal rug-making traditions thanks to his original, one-of-a-kind artworks. Today, Diurne is one of the most sought-after brands for unique rugs, mostly designed by Marcel Zelmanovitch – he has delivered more than 30 collections- alongside special collaborations with contemporary architects and designers.
