Trained as an architect, Federica Tondato discovered her true material almost by accident while filming skilled weavers and embroiderers in Dharamshala, India. Those early drawings became a practice built on a simple conviction that a textile laid flat on the floor can still behave like architecture — one the Turtle Blue Rug carries forward.
This variation on the Turtle motif is finished with chain-stitch embroidery over 100% wool, the blue tones deepening the rug’s shell-like rings into something closer to water than earth. The embroidered outline gives the pattern a drawn, almost hand-sketched quality, echoing the very first pattern studies Tondato made in India before she ever wove a rug of her own.
Federica Tondato has been passionate about weaving techniques from a young age and studied architecture between London and New York. For her, a rug ‘needs to be architecture’. More than decorating a surface, her creations rebuild, open, enlarge and compliment a space. The graphic poetry of her rugs are displayed by the exquisite curves of the embroidery, with its endless permutations, in perfect balance with the shapes. Symbols and motifs give meaning to her work and along with the interplay of lines, complement the tactile relief and seductive textures of her rugs.
