Founded by Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty in Marrakech and Paris, Studio KO has built private houses, museums, and hotels defined by clean lines, natural materials, and an acute sensitivity to light. Their first collaboration with Galerie Diurne, the Echo collection, translates that same architectural discipline into a series of hand-knotted rugs, each one drawing on the great figures of twentieth-century minimalist and conceptual art.
The Huong Rug, designed by Studio KO for Galerie Diurne as part of the Echo collection, brings a name of Vietnamese resonance to a series otherwise steeped in Western minimalist and conceptual art, hinting at Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty’s own restless curiosity across cultures and craft traditions. Its surface unfolds in the same soft, blended graphics that define the collection, evoking an abstract landscape suspended between stillness and quiet vibration.
Hand-knotted in 80% wool and 20% silk using 200,000 Tibetan knots, the Huong Rug is crafted by artisans mastering ancestral techniques of knotting, weaving, and tufting. Bespoke dimensions and colours are available upon request, and, as with all handmade pieces in the Echo collection, slight variations in size and colour are part of each rug’s individual character.
After studying art history and visual arts, Marcel Zelmanovitch launched Galerie Diurne in 1982, his studio/exhibition space in the heart of Quartier Latin in Paris. An artist, and accomplished painter, he looks at rugs as though they were blank canvases, on which he can draw his original patterns. Additionally, Marcel wanted to revive Nepal’s artisanal rug-making traditions thanks to his original, one-of-a-kind artworks. Today, Diurne is one of the most sought-after brands for unique rugs, mostly designed by Marcel Zelmanovitch – he has delivered more than 30 collections- alongside special collaborations with contemporary architects and designers.
