Raised between Darjeeling and Kathmandu, Lisa Mukhia Pretet grew up surrounded by the looms and knotting techniques of the Himalayas long before she co-founded Atelier Février with French designer Florian Pretet. Together they turn Florian’s hand-drawn illustrations, often first sketched in his Moleskine, into rugs hand-knotted stitch by stitch in Nepal, each one eco-friendly by nature and entirely customisable in size, shape and colour.
The Vitesse Rug Grey Oval joins Atelier Février’s rug library, here in an oval format with a grey palette. Vitesse takes the speed of light as its subject, so seemingly still yet so brisk, its silk edges accentuating the pattern’s most delicate details. Hand-knotted in Nepal from 85% Himalayan wool and 15% silk, at 125 knots per square inch (200,000 knots per square metre), the wool anchoring the pile while the silk catches the light along the pattern’s finer lines. Because the Vitesse Rug Grey Oval is entirely made by hand, expect gentle variations from one piece to the next, proof rather than flaw of a rug that around fifty pairs of hands take months to knot, and one you can still resize or recolour to order.
