Pierre Bonnefille is a French artist and designer honored with the title of Maître d’Art, celebrated for inventing his own material language: mineral powders (limestone, lava, marble, earth, bronze, pigments) built up into painterly, sculptural surfaces on small limited-edition furniture.
The Carbon Bloc Cabinet, created by Pierre Bonnefille, Maître d’Art, is not just a cabinet. Worked like a monolith, it explores carbon in every one of its states, from raw coal to crushed charcoal, built up in mixed media across a wooden structure until the surface reads like a transformed fossil, dense, matte and quietly luminous.
The block rests on four patinated brass claws, whose polish contrasts with the raw preciousness of the carbon surface above, or on a Vert de Gris finish for a cooler register. First presented at PAD London in 2016, then at Nomad St Moritz in 2018 and AD Intérieurs 2019 at the Hôtel de Coulanges in Paris, this cabinet is limited to an edition of 8 plus 2 artist’s proofs, entirely handmade in Bonnefille’s Paris studio.

After studying at the Ecole Boulle and then at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Pierre Bonnefille became passionate about materials and colours. At the beginning of the 90s, with the help of Olivier Gagnère and Yves Taralon, he signed the large red fresco on the walls of the Café Marly under the arcades of the Louvre. He is a maestro of chromatic chords. He draws his inspiration from his travels, and distils colours of infinite richness in his work as an artist and furniture designer. Inspired by nature and landscapes, the vibrant surfaces of Pierre Bonnefille’s works invest space, creating a unique and sensitive atmosphere. Working with natural pigments, mineral, limestone, lava or marble powders, one can recognize his imprint in the textured materials and harmonious colours that make up his wall creations as well as his furniture pieces.
