Charlotte Biltgen’s years at India Mahdavi’s studio taught her to trust colour and curve in equal measure, lessons she carried into her own Paris atelier. Rooted in France’s “ensemblier” tradition, she designs pieces meant to be read as part of a whole interior rather than as standalone objects, oak, brass, marble and plaster always shaped into the generous, rounded forms she considers central to her identity as a designer.
The Ettore Sofa channels the bold elegance of 1960s Italy, a nod Biltgen makes explicit through leather shaped with the precision of fine saddlery and brass feet that ground the whole silhouette. Upholstered here in Dedar’s Loreak fabric with a Sherwood 17 leather base, its sculpted armrests are built to invite touch, their aerodynamic curve borrowed from the era’s most glamorous car interiors. Biltgen names Marcello Mastroianni’s effortless charisma as a direct reference point, and the sofa’s mix of sharp lines and sensual curves is her attempt to translate that screen presence into upholstery.
Aiming at reviving the great French tradition of “ensemblier”, Charlotte Biltgen’s designs always resonate with the context of a given space: whether a restaurant, a hotel or a residential space, she invents a specific tailor-made atmosphere, thus continuously renewing her creative approach and signature. With her strong Parisian chic rooted in her creative DNA, and her scholarly culture about materials, she can embrace decoration and details in one same thought, designing furniture and objects first in her mind, picturing an atmosphere before it actually exists, and then making it real with a gentle yet painstaking concern for the perfect finish.
