Nini Magazine Holder

José Zanine Caldas trained as a carpenter and cabinetmaker before turning to furniture, and that grounding in solid Brazilian timber shaped a body of work built on sculptural form rather than applied ornament. The Nini magazine holder carries that instinct directly: a faceted, geometric volume worked from a single reading of wood grain, offered in ebonized finish or in natural or stained Freijó — the golden-toned hardwood long favoured by Brazil’s modernist cabinetmakers for its density and even figure. Rather than concealing the material’s structure, the piece stays legible as solid timber, sculpted rather than assembled. Etel’s re-editions follow the artist’s original drawings and proportions closely, keeping this generation of Brazilian design in production for interiors that pair mid-century warmth with sculptural presence — a study, library, or living room where the object reads as much as object as accessory.
