Etel Carmona founded the label in São Paulo, and today her daughter Lissa Carmona carries it forward as the sole re-editor of landmark Brazilian modernist design, working directly with the estates of masters like José Zanine Caldas, Gregori Warchavchik and Oscar Niemeyer alongside living architects such as Arthur de Mattos Casas. Sustainably sourced native woods, cane and leather, all FSC-certified, keep every re-edition rooted in the country that inspired it.
The ON Round Table was born of Oscar Niemeyer’s frustration with the furniture of his time: convinced that 1970s interiors failed to match the sweeping curves of the architecture he had spent decades building, he decided, with the help of his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer, to design furniture himself. Re-edited by Etel in black lacquered wood, the ON table carries the same sinuous, uninterrupted line that defines Brasília’s iconic silhouettes onto a domestic scale, an invitation to gather around a piece of pure architectural sculpture.
ETEL’s design collection comprises one century of Brazilian furniture. With its pioneering re-edition work, ETEL brings back graceful designs of the modern Brazilian production, discovered only recently, and now considered as one of the most relevant worldwide for that period. Pieces characterised by skilful handiwork and the use of exquisite materials were created by architects and artists intent on unveiling the local culture, under the influence of the international avant-garde. This retrieval is based on a strict methodology, faithfulness to the originals, and intensive collaboration with the institutes and families that represent each creator’s oeuvre. The collection includes pieces by Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Jorge Zalszupin, Giuseppe Scapinelli, among others.
