This console belongs to the moment when Jean-Michel Frank was stripping the vocabulary of French decoration down to its essentials. Iron, worked hot and hammered into slender, right-angled supports, offered him a material with none of the historical baggage of gilt bronze; a way to build structure that read as line rather than ornament. It is a piece from the world of his rue de Verneuil apartment, where Aragon, Breton, and Éluard — central figures in the Surrealist movement — gathered, and where he insisted a room could be made luxurious by what was removed from it rather than added. Ecart International, founded in 1978 by Andrée Putman to rescue the furniture of this generation from obscurity, reissues it faithfully today. In an interior, it holds its own against heavier, more decorated neighbors precisely because it asks for so little attention.
