Woven Cushion Lippi

Bourette silk, spun from the shorter, textured fibres left over after reeling, gives this Jacquard weave its particular depth: a weighty, faintly irregular surface that catches light unevenly rather than uniformly. The pattern, a lattice of geometric flowers set within diamonds, belongs to Jennifer Shorto’s Chinese Collection and traces its origins to the textile traditions of south-west China, where diamond-patterned weaves developed among Dai communities who held onto their own visual language through centuries of Han rule. It reflects Shorto’s method: drawing on her own archive of antique cloth, built since her years studying History of Art at L’Ecole du Louvre, and reworking historic patterns through UK workshops. Sturdy enough for upholstery, the fabric brings that same density and quiet ornamentation to a cushion for a sofa or daybed.
