Woven Cushion Samurai

Add to Wishlist

Drawing on a Japanese samurai skirt as its starting point, this cushion takes its motif from a fabric built of three distinct woven elements set against a cream ground: a honeycomb structure alternates with the coloured grid of a tartan, the two joined by a scattering of snow-flower forms. The effect sits somewhere between armour and textile, structure loosened into pattern. It belongs to Jennifer Shorto’s practice of working from her own collection of historic cloth, here reinterpreting a garment tradition through jacquard weaving rather than print. The design shares its vocabulary with her Pineapples pattern, part of the same family of woven references. Produced with the family-run mills Shorto favours for their specialist know-how, it suits an interior where pattern is expected to read as texture first, motif second.
