Since the seventeenth century, the Mobilier National has served as the guardian of France’s decorative arts heritage, commissioning and preserving furniture for the French Republic’s most prestigious residences and embassies. In recent years the institution has opened its collections to a new generation of makers, selecting only a handful of contemporary designers each year whose work is judged worthy of entering the nation’s permanent patrimony, alongside centuries of royal and republican craftsmanship.

Joëlle Rigal, an ENSCI graduate who cut her teeth designing Louis Vuitton’s Objets Nomades before turning to her own practice with Mercœur Edition, brings a photographer’s sensitivity to how light plays across surfaces into every piece she designs. Limited to nine signed pieces, her Arcy Floor Lamp is cast in enameled, glazed lava rock, a raw volcanic material transformed by fire twice over, once at its geological origin and again in the kiln, so that its rugged surface catches and scatters light unevenly, like embers.
