For more than three hundred years, the Mobilier National has overseen the furnishing of France’s palaces, ministries and embassies, a role that has made it one of the most exacting arbiters of design excellence in the world. Its annual acquisition campaign is a rare honor: only a select group of contemporary designers see their work inducted into this living archive of French craftsmanship, standing permanently alongside pieces once created for kings, presidents and the state itself.

Sophia Taillet, trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris and New York’s School of Visual Arts, designed the Venus Ceiling Lamp for 13Desserts by borrowing the traditional glassblowing techniques once reserved for stained-glass windows and applying them to a freestanding light. Hand-blown in glass and available in blue or red, the fixture was integrated into the Mobilier National’s collections, its saturated, glowing globe treating a domestic ceiling light as if it were a fragment of a cathedral window.
