The son of a sculptor, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance’s approach to design has never strayed far from the chisel and the block. Founder of the Paris studio Neonata, he builds a body of work that moves fluidly between furniture, sculpture and architecture for houses such as Hermès, Baccarat and Saint-Louis, now working from Lisbon chiefly in sculpted and assembled marble, producing pieces in small, tightly numbered editions that read as much as artworks as they do furniture.
Composed of two joined pieces, the Brumes 3 rug is limited to 12 editions and hand-tufted in 75% wool and 25% silk, its title evoking the soft, diffuse quality of mist rather than the sharper drift patterns found elsewhere in the collection. Shown first in brown, it can be produced in bespoke dimensions and colours, its two-part construction allowing it to wrap a larger floor area or follow the line of an unusual room. The blurred edges of its ink-derived pattern give the impression of a landscape only half-revealed.
Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a French designer who explores a wide range of disciplines and materials, which merge into a distinctive body of work. Born in the south of France in 1974, he followed in his father’s footsteps, by studying sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d’art, then earning his design diploma at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. In addition to his spectacular private and commercial projects –including an iconic chalet in the Alps – Noé creates exceptional pieces of furniture in very limited editions. After discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Portugal and the country’s rich craft traditions, he has launched Made In Situ, a design studio that pays tribute to Portuguese storied artistry.
