Sophie Dries trained as an architect before working under Jean Nouvel, Pierre Yovanovitch and Christian Liaigre. She now runs her own studio between Paris and Milan, and was awarded the AD Range Rover Design Award of the Year.

Totem 2 is the second voice in the trio Sophie Dries created for the debut Paris flagship of Michel Vivien, a round stool in solid oak that shares its sibling’s totemic silhouette while standing as its own distinct form. The commission gave the architect-designer room to treat furniture the way she treats a building: as volume first, function second.

Finished here in a golden oak tone, Totem 2 can be pulled up as extra seating or set beside a sofa as a side table, its handmade construction meaning that no two stools ever share exactly the same shape or shade. Alongside Totem 1 and Totem 3, it belongs to a small family of sculptural oak forms designed to be lived with, touched and rearranged.
