Souraya Haddad

Large Oval Plate

Add to Wishlist

Trained first as an architect at ALBA in Beirut, then in landscape design at Université de Montréal, Souraya Haddad brings a formal, structural eye to a material she came to almost by accident, at the Bonsecours ceramics school in Montreal. That architectural instinct now shows in the discipline of her forms and in an ongoing preoccupation with glaze chemistry, developing formulas by hand rather than working from commercial recipes. Grey glazed stoneware here takes on a soft, mineral depth, the kind of surface variation that comes from firing conditions rather than decoration. Because Lebanon has no clay body suited to the high temperatures stoneware demands, Haddad works with material sourced from further afield, an adaptation typical of a design scene built, as House of Today has long argued, on resourcefulness. Suited to a table set with restraint, where the plate’s surface can hold its own.
