Summer Programme: Pierre Bonnefille

Stories News Summer Programme: Pierre Bonnefille

Where will you be this summer? Come and visit us in London to discover the new, riveting designs by the French artist who left his mark at Louvre’s Café Marly.

Following our summer programme of solo shows at Huntsworth Mews, our London Headquarters, we are delighted to present a selection of designs by Pierre Bonnefille. In the space flooded with natural light the French artist conjures nature and the mineral world through an array of striking, one-of-a-kind furniture pieces.

The styles on show are made of the most fascinating materials. Limestone, lava, marble powders, bronze, and even some rare rock fragments from ancient African copper mines, are worked and mixed into surprising new textures. The geometric, monolith-like shapes lend the pieces an utterly sculptural quality and a timeless feel.

Each design on show has a story, told through the materials it is made of; a story – we like to assume – tracing back to the origin of matter. Like poetry in the making, the collection is called Metamorphosis, and is inspired by the natural phenomena of crystallization and mineralization. We look at each table, sideboard or stool as though they were meteorites that landed on the floor of our Mews radiating a powerful energy.

Alongside the seven-piece offering, we present a selection of artworks from the series “Bronze Paintings”. The distinctive feel of the abstract compositions comes from a specially made bronze powder that Bonnefille uses as a pigment on the white canvas. This textured, metal-like “paint” vibrates whilst conjuring powerful visions. The “Bronze Paintings” on display resonate with the entrancing designs around them: art and design coming together as one.

Pierre Bonnefille’s designs, first exhibited at MNAAG, Musée National des Arts Asiatiques – Guimet, in Paris, are available in limited edition signed and numbered.

The exhibition will be open for visitation by-appointment-only. Book your appointment now

Pierre Bonnefille

After studying at the Ecole Boulle and then at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Pierre Bonnefille became passionate about materials and colours. At the beginning of the 90s, with the help of Olivier Gagnère and Yves Taralon, he signed the large red fresco on the walls of the Café Marly under the arcades of the Louvre. He is a maestro of chromatic chords. He draws his inspiration from his travels, and distils colours of infinite richness in his work as an artist and furniture designer. Inspired by nature and landscapes, the vibrant surfaces of Pierre Bonnefille’s works invest space, creating a unique and sensitive atmosphere. Working with natural pigments, mineral, limestone, lava or marble powders, one can recognize his imprint in the textured materials and harmonious colours that make up his wall creations as well as his furniture pieces.
