Galerie Maeght

The first Galerie Maeght opened in Cannes in 1936, and then expanded with a new space in Paris ten years later. The name Maeght – from Aimé Maeght, brilliant patron of the arts, collector and founder– is forever linked to some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century: Braque, Matisse, Léger, Miró, Tàpies Chagall, Kandinsky, Kelly, Calder, and Giacometti, to name but a few.

Man with a vision, Aimé Maeght, was a trailblazer and led the path to the role of art dealer as we know it today. Besides running two art galleries, he was a publisher, film producer, and daring art collector. His vision and understanding of contemporary art materialized in the Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation, the first private museum for contemporary art ever built in France. Created in 1964 in Saint Paul de Vence, the space was designed in collaboration with the artists and housed their work, including the spectacular sculptures gardens. The permanent collection holds more than 10,000 artworks including 50 sculptures by Giacometti, 150 sculptures by Miró, and the largest known painting by Chagall.

Alongside the Foundation, Maeght worked as a publisher, printing fine art books and engravings. The printing house is now run by Jules Maeght. With a catalogue of over 12,000 titles, Maeght Publishing House is recognized as the world’s largest publisher of lithographs and engravings.

Isabelle Maeght is at the helm of the Maeght Gallery, where modern art is paired with the work of contemporary and up-and-coming artists including Olivier Gagnère.
